Club Book List
The club library is a growing resource of chess related books to help players and parents explore chess related topics. Club parents are welcome to browse and checkout books from the club library after informing Terry. Players should finish "Everyone's First Chess Workbook" first before checking books out, but are encouraged to browse the library at the club.
Books should be returned in a month, so other players and parents can also borrow them. Players parents checking out books should record this in the checkout binder on bookcase.
I highly recommend the book "A Guide to Chess Improvement" for parents interested in understanding what is involved in helping a player improve the quality of their gameplay. The beginning chapters are very accessible and do not require knowledge of the game. Much of what we discuss during club meetings is inspired by the author's material, for example the PCOKK meme:
Chess players should take *P*ride in their gameplay and always look for a better move (if there is enough time) before committing.
Chess players should be *C*areful, otherwise they are highly unlikely to play their best game.
Chess players should be *O*ptimistic before and during a game, and not assume they are going to lose against a possibly stronger player.
Chess players should be *K*ind to their opponent when they win a game.
Chess players should be *K*lassy when they lose a game, and not be upset or discouraged. Always try to learn from a loss.
